Design and upgrade of an existing system

Albert Bartlett

The Company
Albert Bartlett supplies own label and branded lines of fresh and frozen potatoes to retail, wholesale, food service and processing customers. The business is based in Airdrie, Scotland, with four further packing sites across the UK, collectively employing over 700 full time staff. Between the sites, the company supplies more than 20% of the UK’s fresh potatoes.

The Problem
As part of the upgrade programme in the potato processing factory, the opportunity arose to review the existing activated sludge plant to ensure it could manage future demands following the introduction of new production practices within the plant.

The Solution
MSE Systems performed a full review of the existing wastewater treatment plant.

This review found that the activated sludge process could be greatly be improved and oxygen demand reduced through the addition of a high efficiency Dissolved Air Flotation plant with suitable chemical addition designed to remove suspended solids, free emulsified oils and grease and elevated residual Phosphorus.

The addition of a DAF unit would enable Albert Bartlett to meet and maintain a stringent Environment Agency discharge consent, thus remaining fully compliant.

The challenge for MSE Systems was to design and upgrade the existing system utilizing only a very small footprint between existing plants. This was achieved through the installation of a 90 m3/hr DAF unit.

It was essential that the installation proceeded with the minimal amount of disruption and within a tight time frame in order for the factory to reopen on time.

The new wastewater treatment plant was delivered by MSE Systems on time and within budget.
