Distilling requires the use of large volumes of water.

This high water usage and the high Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demans (COD) loading of the subsequent effluent streams often leads to the requirement for further treatment of this wastewater.

These wastewater effluents can be processed using Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) technology. The space saving of using high capacity hollow fibre membrane systems can result in a footprint of less than half than that of a conventional biological treatment system.
